Research shows depression may lead to higher stroke risks

11/07/11

Research gathered from 17 previous studies and examined in the journal Stroke revealed that individuals who experience some form of depression are about a third more likely to suffer from a stroke.

Maria Glymour, professor at the Harvard School of Public Health, told Reuters Health that the analysis is convincing, but she is unsure whether experiencing depression leads to strokes or if the two diseases share the same origins.

Glymour believes the link between the two diseases is a result of unhealthy behavior as opposed to one causing the other.

"For example, we know that depression affects the behavior that influences your stroke risk, such as diet, physical activity, adherence to health advice," Glymour told Reuters Health. "Those things take a certain amount of energy, and being depressed might affect your ability to do them."

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 137,000 deaths occur from strokes yearly in the United States and recovery can take months or even years. The alarming number of annual deaths from strokes is a call for Americans to research the life insurance options that are available.
