Prostate cancer treatment regretted by men with heart disease

12/14/11

According to a recent study, men with heart disease are likely to regret prostate cancer treatment, given relatively insignificant benefits most men see after radiation or surgery.

Researchers examined 800 men who were treated for prostate cancer through surgery, radiation or hormone therapy and had signs that they were relapsing. Fifteen percent of the men studied said they regretted being treated for cancer and those with heart disease were 52 percent more likely than the others to regret receiving cancer treatment.

"We didn't study all men with prostate cancer, so their feelings about treatment may be different from those who don't have recurring prostate cancer," Nguyen told Reuters Health. "This study tells men who have other diseases that maybe they should take a step back and not treat the cancer right away."

Some experts believe the study shows that men with prostate cancer should be closely monitored by having blood drawn every three to six months to measure levels of prostate specific antigen instead of being treated right away. Using this method might give doctors a more accurate idea of whether treatment is required, and what the best treatment regimen might be.

Researchers also found that men who regretted the treatment were more likely to be younger, African-American or experience bowel problems from the therapy.

Out of the 240,000 American men diagnosed with prostate cancer yearly, 130,000 are considered low-risk, according to a Washington Post article. Given the prevalence of both heart disease and prostate cancer, and the difficult choices some men must make about courses of treatment, it's smart for men to invest in life insurance, to guarantee that no matter what their own health outcomes, their family and loved ones will be protected financially.
