Processed meat linked to pancreatic cancer

01/16/12

According to Swedish researchers, a link has been found between eating processed meats and developing pancreatic cancer.

Eating an extra 50 grams of processed meats, such as bacon or sausages, as part of a daily diet is likely to increase a person's risk of developing pancreatic cancer by 19 percent. Consuming red and processed meats was previously linked to bowel cancer by U.K. health experts, who recommended eating no more than 70 grams per day.

Professor Susanna Larsson, who conducted the study at the Karolinska Institute, told the BBC that correlations made between cancers and food are controversial.

"It is known that eating meat increases the risk of colorectal cancer, it's not so much known about other cancers," she said. "Pancreatic cancer has poor survival rates. So as well as diagnosing it early, it's important to understand what can increase the risk of this disease."

The study included 11 trials involving 6,643 patients with pancreatic cancer, and revealed that eating processed meats increased the risk of pancreatic cancer by 19 percent, and 38 percent if more than 150 grams were consumed daily.

The National Cancer Institute estimates that 37,390 Americans will die from pancreatic cancer in 2012, which indicates why exploring life insurance is a necessity for adults.
