Plaque-clearing drug fights Alzheimer's

02/15/12

Scientist recently made potentially groundbreaking discoveries in the fight against Alzheimer's disease, discovering that a drug typically used to combat T cell lymphoma can also help clear the body of amyloid beta proteins.

The researchers from Case Western University did a study of mice, giving them the T cell drug bexarotene, which assists in the fight against Alzheimer's.

“We are excited about today’s announcement by Case Western University researchers that a cancer drug, used in mice studies, appears to help clear out the excess plaque found in the Alzheimer’s-disease brain, and it does this by enhancing the body’s natural defense mechanisms,” said Stacy Pagos Haller, president and CEO of the American Health Assistance Foundation. “This follows last week’s announced discovery of how Alzheimer’s disease spreads in the brain. The timing of these findings coincides with new proposals in Congress and the White House to increase federal funding for Alzheimer’s research. This has been a big week for all who seek to end this disease.”

According to the Alzheimer's Association, an estimated 5.4 million people in the United States have the disease, which might encourage people to invest in life insurance.
