Older adults contracting STDs

12/28/11

Elderly Americans are being diagnosed with sexually transmitted diseases at an alarming rate, which some experts believe is a result of the aging baby boomer generation engaging in risky behavior.

According to the Akron Beacon Journal, older adults grew up in a time when sexually transmitted diseases weren't as prevalent as they are today, which might put them at a higher risk for sexually transmitted diseases if they aren't protecting themselves more than they might have in the past.

"People old enough to know better getting STDs? Sounds like people smoking and getting cancer," said Barbara De-Leone, a member of the Beacon Journal's baby-boomer readers group. "Perhaps my age group can't give up on the '70s notion that if it feels good, do it, no matter the consequences."

According to data from Summit County, Ohio, 13 percent of the people who tested positive for HIV over the past five years in the area were over the age of 50. The numbers increased from 6 percent in 2006 to 20 percent in 2010, which rivals the numbers the 20-24 age group reported.

The source reported herpes, gonorrhea and chlamydia are more common among the elderly, but a large portion of cases go unreported.

With approximately 41,000 to 51,000 Americans being infected with an STD each day, some with diseases such as syphilis and HIV that can be fatal if untreated, Americans should consider investing in life insurance to prepare for any unexpected health care expenses or other unforeseen future circumstances.
