New technology bringing optimism to stroke patients

12/30/11

A new trial of robotic arms created for stroke patients is giving hope to victims of the leading cause of disability in the United States.

One of the patients who survived a stroke at the age of 23 is making progress, learning to use a robotic arm to pursue his passion.

Spencer Telligman suffered a stroke last January, which took away the use of his right hand, which he uses to paint, but he has coped with the condition with the help of the new technology.

"You're putting paint on canvas and it feels great, it's just awesome," said Telligman to Seattle's King 5 News. "I've been worrying since, since it happened that I wouldn't be able to do anything anymore."

Telligman and other patients who suffered from strokes do repetitive exercises and participate in activities wearing the motorized robotic arm to help retrain their brain and make their own arms function. The patients also take a drug that assists in helping the brain learn activities that were lost after they suffered strokes.

A recent study suggested that so-called silent strokes, or clusters of dead brain cells, might be the cause of memory loss, which might encourage Americans to secure life insurance early in life, before advancing age increases the risk of suffering from debilitating strokes or diseases.
