New medication shows promise against cancer

01/19/12

Research recently conducted by Bayer HealthCare showed that a medication for patients with advanced colorectal cancer may give them an extended life and slow down tumor growth.

Bayer is now planning to seek approval from the Food and Drug Administration for the drug regorafenib, which would be the first new treatment for colorectal cancer in more than five years.

"I think this is a new tool in the armamentarium for patients with this disease," said Dr. Heinz-Josef Lenz, a professor at USC Keck School of Medicine and investigator in the regorafenib trial. "In colon cancers, we've seen significant changes. Patients who have been treated for years are in good shape, and when they fail one treatment they demand more treatment."

The new data comes from a study of 760 individuals with colorectal cancer who had exhausted all other options in treatment. The patients who received the drug survived 6.4 months on average, compared with five months for those who received a placebo, and 44 percent of the patients on the drug had prolonged periods of stagnant tumor growth.

With the drug not being approved yet and colorectal cancer being the third most common cancer diagnosed in men and women in the United States, Americans who have been diagnosed with the disease or are at risk for it should explore their life insurance options to ensure their dependents and loved ones are financially secure, given an uncertain future.
