Most notable health stories of 2011

12/29/11

As 2011 comes to an end, the year's most documented health stories may have left an impact that will linger on into 2012.

The most deadly listeria outbreak in U.S. history and nuclear radiation concerns after the Japan earthquake were the most notable stories of the year in health, as listed by CNN, but a few others also made news that could have an impact into the new year.

The World Health Organization announced in May that radiation from cell phones could possibly cause cancer, which made mobile phone users hesitant about using their devices as often. CNN Chief Medical Correspondent, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, said that the radiation from cell phones could have a significant effect on brain tumors developing.

A listeria outbreak in cataloupe, which was first found in September, killed 29 people and made about 150 people in the United States sick. This event marked the deadliest outbreak of listeria since the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention began keeping track.

The healthcare reform package signed into law by President Barack Obama in 2010 went through legal challenges in 2011 and will be presented to the Supreme Court in 2012. The law is being challenged by 26 states, but has provided 2.5 million young people with health insurance coverage.
