Moderate alcohol consumption could benefit Alzheimer's patients

01/19/12

According to a study conducted by the Center for Mental Health Research at Australian National University, alcohol consumption might have a positive effect on patients suffering from Alzheimer's disease.

The study included 15,000 participants and found that light drinkers had close to a 30 percent lower risk for dementia when compared to people who didn't drink at all or overindulged.

Too much alcohol has been proven to be harmful to the brain, which has led people who consume alcohol to wonder how much is too much. Studies suggest that one glass of wine or spirits is good for the brains of women and two glasses is the healthy limit for men, according to Gary Small of the UCLA Longevity Center, who recently wrote an article for the Huffington Post.

Some experts suggest the effect of light alcohol on Alzheimer's patients is a result of the associated lifestyle habits, such as dealing with life in moderation and taking stress with a positive attitude, Small stated.

According to the Mayo Clinic, alcohol consumption can also be beneficial to health in many other areas. It may also reduce the risk of developing heart disease, dying of a heart attack, and reduce the risks of stroke, gallstones and diabetes.

Regardless of whether alcohol enhances or compromises health, no substance provides a magic bullet to guarantee long-term good health; for this reason, all Americans need to consider investing in a life insurance policy.
