Military develops breast cancer treatment

01/10/12

Military researchers recently developed a drug that could cut the recurrence rate of breast cancer.

The vaccine will soon be tested in the final phase required before earning U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval, according to Dr. George Peoples, director and principal investigator of the Cancer Vaccine Development Program at San Antonio Military Medical Center, according to the Armed Forces Press Service.

The vaccine, which has been named E-75, aims to be lifesaving for breast cancer survivors, the source reported. Breast cancer is the most prevalent type of cancer in the military community where Dr. Peoples is the chief of surgical oncology.

“We’ve made a commitment to take care of active-duty personnel, spouses and retirees,” Peoples said. “And cancer is a notable problem among beneficiaries.”

According to Peoples, the vaccine targets a protein which is commonly associated with breast cancer cells called human epidermal growth factor receptor 2.

Testing began with 200 patients in 2001 and will potentially involve 700 to 1,000 patients in the next phase, according to the AFPS.

With more than 200,000 women diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011, according to the National Cancer Institute, life insurance is an option that should be explored by women looking to protect their loved ones should unforeseen circumstances arise in the future.
