Knee replacement surgeries double over past decade

02/15/12

Recent research has found that more than 4.5 million Americans are living with a total knee replacement and surgeries to replace knees have more than doubled over the past decade.

According to the research, the sharpest rise in cases was seen in younger patients, and osteoporosis continues to be the main reason for patients requiring total knee replacement surgery.

"The number of total knee replacements is growing drastically," said Elena Losina, lead investigator and co-director of Orthopedic and Arthritis Center for Outcomes Research at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. "We now have a lot of people living with TKR."

Losina added that TKR may lead to substantial increases in the likelihood of revisions and complications, especially in younger patients.

Researchers compiled evidence from the U.S. Census Bureau data; information from the National Health Interview Survey, the Multicenter Osteoarthritis Study and the Osteoarthritis Initiative; and other national data to determine how many Americans are living with TKR.

Osteoporosis affects more than 200 million women worldwide, according to the International Osteoporosis Foundation, which might encourage Americans to secure life insurance to prepare for the disease possibly having an effect on their lives.
