Increase in senior population causing shortage in care

11/28/11

With November being Alzheimer's Disease Awareness month, attention is being given to the amount of care that Alzheimer's patients are receiving, considering the increase in the senior population in America.

The increase in senior population has coincided with a reduction in community-based care programs, which is an issue for the elderly, who are in need of closer attention as a result of terminal illnesses, according to a recent Vacaville Reporter column written by California Assemblywoman Mariko Yamada.

It is estimated that one in four California families is currently involved in caring for a loved one with a disability, which can be taxing on the family, Yamada noted.

Yamada pointed out that 14.9 million families and friends provided 17 billion hours of unpaid care to people with Alzheimer's and other dementias in 2010, which totaled $202.6 billion worth of care. She is working with the home-care industry to pass legislation to create stronger patient protections by requiring home-care agencies be licensed by the state's Department of Social Services. This will help ensure every in-home caretaker is fully capable of performing his or her duties.

According to the website EMedicineHealth, four to five million people in the United States have some form of dementia. This statistic underscores that life insurance is an important investment for senior citizens who are wishing to prepare for unexpected health issues in the future.
