Hot flushes and night sweats still experienced after menopause

10/24/11

Women are suffering from hot flushes, also known as hot flashes, and night sweats years after they've went through menopause, according to a new study released in BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

The average age of U.S. and European women who experience menopause is about 50 to 51, and night sweats and hot flushes are considered to be main symptoms of the condition that on average lasts two to five years.

"Our study looked at a large number of older postmenopausal women and we were surprised to find that menopausal symptoms persisted in over half of the women," co-author Professor Myra said. "They were still having hot flushes on average 10 years after their last period."

The study examined 10,418 women between 54 and 65 who were considered to be at least 12 months removed from menopause symptoms by doctors. The report examined the age, BMI, hysterectomy, hormone therapy use, lifestyle and mood of the women.

The study found that 54 percent of the women were still experiencing hot flushes and night sweats on an average of 33.5 times a week, which is a statistic the authors of the study believe should raise awareness about the topic among women and health professionals.

The individuals in the age range of the women surveyed in this study are encouraged to explore life insurance options in order to prepare themselves and their families for the future. According to LIMRA, only 57 percent of women are signed up for some form of life insurance.
