Georgia’s Gwinnett County expecting to save $5.2 million in employee benefits

10/17/11

Gwinnett County, Georgia, is expecting to save $5.2 million in employee benefits next year by using a recent cost-saving trend employed by several other counties, governments and private sector companies.

The potential savings will help Gwinnett balance its budget, giving them a boost going into next year, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

“We’re just looking at how we do everything,” Human Resources Director Kenneth Poe said. “For this organization, benefits are a huge, huge expense.”

Gwinnett expects to spend about $55.8 million in employee and retiree medical, life insurance and related benefits next year, down from $60.9 million in 2009, the Journal-Constitution reported.

By reorganizing the way it distributes policies and changing the amount policyholders are required to pay in deductibles, the county was able to reduce its expenses and find affordable life insurance offerings that still provided employees with a financial security benefit.

Gwinnett has a population of more than 800,000, according to its government, with 3,900 employees and 1,140 retirees receiving benefits from the county.
