Diabetes tackled with new diet

11/22/11

The Mayo Clinic recently announced the release of The Mayo Clinic Diabetes Diet, which is aimed towards helping people with diabetes lower their weight and control their blood sugar.

The diet is a two-phase plan meant to help people who are most at risk prevent the disease and maintain their weight loss. The first phase is a two-week rapid weight loss plan. This is followed by a phase of more incremental weight loss that can be sustained, leading to lower blood sugar.

“Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight is a critical factor in controlling blood sugar and managing diabetes for the majority of people with diabetes and pre-diabetes,” said Donald Hensrud, chair of preventive medicine at Mayo Clinic. “With The Mayo Clinic Diabetes Diet, people can truly manage diabetes, eat well, lose weight and enjoy life.”

The diabetes diet comes from The New York Times No. 1 bestseller, The Mayo Clinic Diet.

There are more than 25 million Americans who suffer from diabetes and 79 million pre-diabetic adults, according to the American Diabetes Association. The large number of Americans with diabetes and diabetes' correlations to other health problems may encourage individuals to explore life insurance options.
