According to leading experts on diabetes, the disease is now the most significant public health problem worldwide, and the current model of care for the disease is obsolete.
"We are at an important crossroads in diabetes care, and we must engage in an honest debate about the issues surrounding diabetes today if we are to ever have a chance at preventing the disease from exacting what can only be viewed as a catastrophic impact on global health," said Merri Pendergrass, national practice leader for the Medco Diabetes Therapeutic Resource Center.
Dr. Vivian Fonseca and Dr. Steven Edelman both believe the current system is not viable and requires reconfiguring. Speaking to Dr. Pendergrass as part of a Medco video series, both physicians called for a healthcare model that would facilitate the use of new technology by a primary physician who is supported by a range of specialists.
According to the National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse, among U.S. residents 65 years of age, 10.9 million, or 26 percent, were diagnosed with diabetes in 2010. This figure highlights the importance of exploring life insurance options, which will prepare families for future unexpected circumstances.
