Coffee may prevent type 2 diabetes

01/24/12

According to a group of Chinese researchers, a few cups of coffee per day may be the answer to preventing type 2 diabetes.

The study, which was funded by various Chinese authorities, was published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. Researchers determined that some major coffee components and metabolites are capable of hindering the the toxic aggregation of human islet amyloid polypeptide, which has been linked to the onset of type 2 diabetes.

Researchers believe that by stopping aggregation of hIAPP, scientists may have a future method of reducing Type 2 diabetes.

Dr. Vivian Fonseca, president of medicine and science at the American Diabetes Association, believes the study is impressive, but needs further research.

“Scientifically, this is a very nice paper, but it has its limitations," Fonseca said to USA Today. "This was done in cells, not in animals or people. We also don’t know if the (abnormal deposits arising from hIAPP) are the most important thing in the development of type 2 diabetes, or if it’s something that develops later.”

According to the National Diabetes Fact Sheet from the American Diabetes Association, 25.8 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes, which might cause alarm for some and compel them to secure a life insurance policy to prepare for an uncertain future.
