Coffee may lower uterine cancer risk

11/23/11

A study of more than 67,000 U.S. nurses found that women who drink coffee four or more times a day could decrease their risk of developing cancer in the lining of their uterus.

The study showed women who drank four cups of coffee a day were 25 percent less likely to develop endometrial cancer than women who drank less than one cup a day. Despite the recent findings, experts aren't recommending drinking more coffee without further studies of this figure.

"It would be premature to make a recommendation that women drink coffee to lower their endometrial cancer risk," said senior researcher Edward Giovannucci, of the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston.

The study also examined the women's weight, which is linked to a higher risk of endometrial cancer.

It's estimated that 46,470 women will be diagnosed with cancer of the corpus and uterus in 2011, and 8,120 women will die of these diseases, according to the National Cancer Institute. Considering these figures, women are encouraged to invest in life insurance to prepare for the future.
