A Chicago suburb plans to reward the volunteers on its commissions with extended life insurance benefits on par with the coverage village employees earn.
According to TribLocal, a proposal to extend Willowbrook volunteers life insurance as well as accidental death and dismemberment coverage was approved by trustees at a recent board meeting.
“Over the last year appointed and elected officials have brought to my attention newspaper articles and radio broadcasts and internet stories about tragic public incidents that have occurred at meetings around the country,” Tim Halik, village administrator, told the news source.
Havlik added that this move is an economical way for the village to compensate volunteers for their time. A total of 16 members of the village's park and plan commission and board of police will be eligible for life insurance valued at as much as $100,000.
According to Provident Insurance, accidents are the number one cause of death among individuals under age 38 and the fifth leading cause of death in all age groups. Accidental death and dismemberment insurance provides added coverage for those who put themselves in danger on a daily basis and require that extra protection on their policy.
