Cervical Health Awareness Month activities get underway

12/29/11

In 2011, close to 13,000 women were diagnosed with cervical cancer and more than 4,000 died from more advanced forms of the disease, the National Cancer Institute reported.

With January being Cervical Health Awareness Month, companies are providing many services to help raise awareness for screening and preventive care for the disease, which forms in the cervix and is usually a slow-growing cancer that may not have symptoms, but can be found through Pap tests.

Regular Pap tests detect significant abnormal cell changes that may arise before cancer develops, and this early detection can reduce deaths from cervical cancer.

Experts suggest that sexually active women ages 21 to 70 should be screened every two or three years for cervical cancer and should seek medical advice about when they should begin screening for cancer.

The most recent NCI statistics showed that more than 20 percent of women over the age of 18 had not been tested for cancer through a Pap test within the past three years.

According to the NCI, cervical cancer is usually caused by human papillomavirus infection. Regardless of whether they are especially at-risk for the disease, women would be wise to not only consider regular screening but investment in a life insurance policy.
