Americans urged to receive flu shots

12/06/11

Americans often delay receiving a flu shot, with some not receiving one at all. Health officials are urging Americans to put flu shots on their holiday to-do list after cases were confirmed in 30 states.

Officials of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases informed Americans that January and February are often the peak months of people reporting flu symptoms, according to USA Today.

Anne Schuchat, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Illness, encouraged Americans to go get flu shots or nasal sprays now so "you're protected before the holiday season begins, when you get on that plane, train or bus to go see loved ones."

According to officials at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a total of 36.3 percent of Americans older than 6 months had been vaccinated for the flu by early November, which is an increase from the 32.8 percent from the previous year, USA Today reported.

With the lowest number of citizens investing in life insurance in 50 years, Americans who have already received their flu shots might look to life insurance as another line of defense to prepare for any unexpected health issues in the future.
