Americans' salt intake concerns health experts

11/23/11

Health experts are concerned about Americans' intake of salt, which has been proven to cause heart disease.

A new study addressed the question of how much salt is too much. The study examined sodium excretion in urine of 28,800 adults who were at a high risk for heart disease or diabetes. Some of the participants had already been diagnosed with heart disease.

Sodium excretion was measured for 24 hours by the researchers, from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. The researchers then analyzed participants' cardiovascular problems and deaths four to five years later.

The study confirmed that higher sodium excretion was linked to an increased risk of stroke, heart attack and cardiovascular death compared to participants who had moderate sodium excretion.

Unusually low sodium excretion was also linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular death. Reporting on the study, the Los Angeles Times pointed out that low sodium excretion is often a symptom of conditions causing fluid retention.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 785,000 Americans had a heart attack in 2010. The possibility of unexpected health outcomes should encourage Americans to explore life insurance options.
