More Americans are approaching retirement age than ever and deciding on how to spend those golden years may cause problems for some married couples, according to the Financial Post. Couples that have been able to survive raising children and navigating through life together may have very different ideas of how they want to spend their retirement.
Experts believe that husbands and wives who have spent years compromising may not want to do so in retirement. Some people want to downsize their homes while others do not have any desire to move. Traveling may sound life fun to many, but others would rather keep working for a few extra years.
Close to two-thirds of couples do not agree on when they want to retire and another one-third are unsure of where they want to live, according to a survey conducted for Fidelity Investments by Richard Day Research Incorporated.
In addition, proper financial planning through retirement savings and annuity investments can help determine what people are able to do. Close to 73 percent of couples actually disagree on whether they have a proper retirement income plan.
