How to choose a life insurance agency

A life insurance agency or brokerage is an organization of life insurance agents.  Individually, the clues on this page won’t assure you that a particular agency is a sound choice, but taken together, they vouch fairly well for its reliability.

Look for third-party opinions

It isn’t as easy to find reviews of insurance agencies as for books or films.  Still, real-life stories or testimonials may offer clues regarding the service of a particular agency.  Beyond that, the Better Business Bureau, which has been around since 1912, is a good indication of trustworthiness.  Check the BBB for reports of your agency.

Look for experience

The "About us" portion of an agency’s website is the agency’s chance to brag.  Look for clues about its history.  How long an agency has been in business is also a clue.  The insurance industry is rather heavily regulated, so an agency which has been in business for multiple decades probably does not indulge in illegal and unethical practices.

Look for security

If you’re reading this, it’s because you’re shopping for life insurance online, so internet security is of vital importance.  Ensure that your agency encrypts any personal information that you might send them through their website.  Look for a security signature or security seal.  (Click the VeriSign icon on this page to see our certificate.)
