Viatical Settlements

The Dictionary of Insurance Terms and Definitions

A terminally ill policyholder can sell his life insurance policy to a viatical company, who will pay a portion of the death benefit (usually 60–80%).  The viatical company will collect the full death benefit upon the decease of the insured, but in the meanwhile, the insured can make use of the money from the sale.
